Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) is now on every board deck and every EU CSRD report. This is the operator's playbook — what to measure, how to shrink it, and how to report it without inflating numbers.

The WUE definition

WUE = site water consumption (L) / IT energy (kWh). It's a ratio, so 0.0 is a fully closed-loop, dry-cooled facility and 2.5+ is a heavy evaporative site. Warm-water DLC pushes WUE toward zero because closed secondary loops don't consume water.

How to measure it correctly

  1. Meter both potable and reclaimed water at the site boundary, monthly.
  2. Log IT energy at the PDU output, not the utility inlet.
  3. Deduct water used for non-IT loads (offices, landscaping) from the numerator.
  4. Report annualised WUE, not spot readings — evaporative loads spike in summer.

Cutting WUE without cooking the silicon

  • Warm-water DLC. 32–40 °C supply unlocks dry-cooler-only operation across most of Europe and coastal NA.
  • Adiabatic assist only above 30 °C ambient. Control the spray by wet-bulb, not schedule.
  • Reclaimed water for evap. Greywater or greenhouse condensate cuts potable draw in half at typical hyperscale sites.
  • Zero make-up on the secondary loop. Any water top-up on the closed side means you have a leak — find it.

Regulatory reporting

EU CSRD, the German EnEfG, and California SB 253 all require water disclosure. Reporting under the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact uses the ISO 30134-9 WUE definition — align your metering plan to that standard from day one to avoid restating history.

FAQ

Is a low WUE always good?

Not if it comes at the cost of high PUE. A dry-cooled site with mechanical assist can beat an evaporative site on total carbon even at higher PUE. Report both together.
